Jun. 6th, 2008 12:01 pmMy world, it is rocked on its axis!
I subscribe to "Poetry" magazine and usually end up hating about 3/4ths of the poems in it. Then I berate myself for not being more open minded and decide that I'm just not down with the times. Then I pick up a book like Robert Hass's "Time and Materials" and my soul says, "Ah, here is poetry." Then I post some of it in my livejournal. Heh. Seriously though if you like contemporary poetry, this book is spectacular. Here are a couple shorter ones.
After Goethe
In all the mountains,
Stillness;
In the treetops
Not a breath of wind.
The birds are silent in the woods.
Just wait: soon enough
You will be quiet too.
Iowa, January
In the long winter nights, a farmer's dreams are narrow.
Over and over, he enters the furrow.
After Trakl
October night, the sun going down,
Evening with its brown and blue
(Music from another room),
Evening with its blue and brown.
October night, the sun going down.
